I played around with this painting a bit from my reference. I took a photo of this lighthouse in daylight , but felt it would be more effective if it had the light on. Since a favorite time of day for me is twilight, I changed the time of day and moved the boat, which was at the side of the lighthouse, up into the foreground.

I went to a soccer game that my daughter was playing in (Adult recreational league) and this young girl sat on the grass in front of me, watching the women warming-up for their game. I always have my sketch book with me, so I quickly sketched the elements of this painting.

I am still in the process of completing this painting, but its far enough along that I though I would post it so you could follow it's progress.

I am a recreational private pilot, I also enjoy flying RC models, as seen in this painting. These models are actually every bit as hard, maybe harder to fly than a Cessna, or my favourite the Diamond Katana C1.

What I have painted here is a glimpse of a social meeting of like minded hobbists. This painting would be ideal for anyone who enjoys aviation or who like me dreamed of flying as a 12 year old.

I went out on Thursday June 15, 2006 and painted this Plein Air or as I like to call it "live painting" at the end of Windermere Road, at the Thames River. I started painting at about 6:45 pm and finished at about 8:15, I made a couple of value changes in the studio, and this is it.

This is something you will see more of, I really enjoy painting live..I plan to paint every Thursday evening this summer and will be making postings often...keep checking back...

Here is the 2nd in my Thursday series...

Painted Thursday June 22, 2006. It threatened rain so in keeping things going, I went out on the deck of my home and painted this, it was a light fairly even overcast, and I had about 2 hours of light to do this in. The hanging basket is made up of geraniums and the purple danglers are called Tango. This is one of three baskets we have hanging on the upright posts of a cabana that is attached to the deck.

Here is the 3rd in my Thursday series...

Painted Thursday June 29, 2006. The bridge is the Adelaide St. North, here in London, CA, and I went out at 6:30 pm and back in my studio at 8:30. The river flows at the back of a baseball and soccer sports fields, and there were games going on, and plenty of passers-by stopping to see what I was doing. Everyone liked my work, which is encouraging. It really is a very active river, there were 2 canoes paddled by, a couple of geese families, fishermen, and one plein air painter (me).

Thursday July 6 Painting.
This painting location is right in the heart of London, Canada at the Forks of the Thames river, which divides in two directions where the park is located. The park has bike and walking paths, play areas and a water fun area, but it also has a magnificent view of the city, and that was what I was after for this painting.
For anyone interested, in the painting barley visible behind the trees, lower-mid left is the art gallery with its unique multiple-rounded roof line; the large building in the centre is the court house; the old jail (now a museum) has the peeked green (copper) roof; just behind that is the old county court house, which looks like a castle.

Below The Falls, somewhat real, somewhat imaginary. I painted this from photo reference, mostly as an experiment, to see the differences compaired to en plein air. I used very large brushes for most of this painting, and painted it in en plein air technique. I am very happy with the results, and the energy in this painting...so I will be painting more in this style. See close-up detail below, to get an idea of the fun and enjoyment I had making this painting.

Below The Falls detail. I am showing this enlargement area to let you see the energy in the brushwork, the en plein air style brushstrokes and colour. I use mostly straight strokes everywhere, and I paint directly to the canvas...no drawing and re-drawing...this painting evolves directly from my brush, and the faster I paint, the more control I have.

I really enjoy making paintings that look quite real at about 6 feet back and when viewed up close, you see the heavy brushwork.

En Plein Air In downtown London, I painted this on opening day of the paint out, July 14, 2006. This scene is at about 10:00 am, where I set up in the shade. The event runs until July 23, 2006 so there will be a few other to add as I go.

Fresh cut flowers sitting on window ledge. I really enjoyed painting the soft light illuminating the petals of the flowers. If a window doesn't have a view outside (another building for example) then just add a fresh vase of flowers to improve the view!
